Monsoon Oil on Canvas 60 X 72 Inches 2012
Looking down at car tracks in snow from her second floor window and the beauty of the stark black lines against white is what inspired Kathryn to begin a series of “tracking”. The tracking-marks in several paintings appear to be ghost lines of our recent movement and offer evidence of our existence. Where we have been, back and forth in our repetitive lives.
Kathryn uses clouds as a leitmotif. The viewer is looking down. This voyeuristic viewing of the world from above has given rise to a fictional landscape/abstraction series. For this exhibit we remain in floating position, elevated from suburban ennui and the grit of industry. Although clouds are linked to the manifestations of unseen forces on earth, they are also created by discharge from industry and changes in weather patterns. These are very visceral paintings with surfaces that protrude in topographical relief. Some of the work seems to have a primeval quality due to the striations and scratches made in paint.
